“Vickers Wellington

Dr Barnes Wallis of the bouncing bomb (Dam Buster) fame designed this aircraft. Previously, he had designed airships and used the geodetic construction to build the aircraft and then covered it with fabric, which was then doped to stretch and strengthen the frames. One was built and flown at the Broughton, Chester factory in 24 hours during the war as a special effort. I [George Doughty] worked on one at Silloth, which had a rectangular bomb bay, with no doors, to carry a Barnes Wallis 4000lb bomb. It could stand quite a lot of battle damage due to its structure.”
